On September 20, 2026, Amazon began notifying users who tried to purchase through Muse AI, saying, “Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.” The ban was publicly reported by tech outlets on September 21, 2026, after an Amazon spokesperson confirmed the block on Meta AI.
Now , why does amazon block meta ai muse ?
Amazon raised 3 operational & technical concerns regarding Muse,
- Amazon requires automated software to clearly identify itself in web server code using specific user tags. But the Muse agent is designed to browse without declaring itself as automated software; it masks its identity and makes it indistinguishable from humans, which violates safety protocols.
- Muse works by logging into e-commerce sites directly as the user via its own browser interface. Amazon thinks that Muse might capture, handle, and store customer login credentials and account data, posing serious privacy and security hazards.
- Normally, if a software application wants to interact with a major platform like Amazon, it uses an Application Programming Interface (API). To use it, a company must sign a commercial data-sharing agreement, get authenticated keys, and follow strict usage limits set by the host platform. Because Amazon had no interest in letting a massive competitor like Meta manage its customer relationships, no such API agreement existed for Muse AI. Amazon claims Meta integrated Amazon.com into Muse without prior notice or a commercial agreement governing data access.
What Meta comment on this matter? Meta explains how Muse AI actually handles user privacy and security,
- Meta states that Muse operates without direct visibility into user passwords or payment details. Any login credentials entered by a user are stored in an encrypted vault, allowing the agent to perform actions without reading or exposing sensitive text.
- Meta says that the Muse AI agent acts as an extension of the consumer rather than an unauthorized third-party bot.
It is also worth noting that consumer trust in Meta is very low. On Wednesday, September 10, 2026, an Oppenheimer survey revealed that only 8% of U.S. consumers trust Meta with their passwords, compared to 30% for Google. Only 13% of the population stated they would share all their passwords with an AI.
Meta shifted its strategy and now partnered with Shopify. This gives Muse AI an authorized, API-driven gateway to do automated shopping across millions of independent online businesses.
While amazon still strictly restricts the automated shopping activities from ai agents including, ChatGPT, Gemini and perplexity comet browser citing data protection.
